What is Burrata Caprese Salad
Burrata caprese salad consists of sliced tomatoes and a ball of burrata cheese seasoned with chopped fresh basil, salt, pepper, olive oil, and either balsamic vinegar or a balsamic glaze. Traditionally, caprese salads are made with sliced heirloom tomatoes. However, I prefer to use cherry tomatoes as I think they’re easier to eat with a fork.
Caprese salad is especially popular in the Naples region of Italy with it’s origins believed to be on the Island of Capri off the coast of Naples. Burrata cheese has it’s origins about 130 miles (200 km) straight east of Naples in the town of Andria in Southern Italy. While similar to mozzarella cheese in flavor, burrata has a solid outer casing with a creamy center.
How to Make Burrata Caprese Salad
Burrata caprese salad is very simple to make with the bulk of your time being spent slicing the tomatoes. Below are step-by-step instructions on how to prepare this fresh Italian salad:
1. First, slice the cherry tomatoes in half and place in a serving bowl.
2. Next, chop the basil leaves and sprinkle evenly over the tomatoes.
3. After you add the basil, lightly season the tomatoes and basil with sea salt.
4. Next, add the burrata cheese ball to the center of your caprese salad. You may need to move the tomatoes around a bit to make room for the burrata ball.
5. Once the barrata is in place, make a horizontal and vertical slice on the burrata ball and gently split it open with your knife.
6. Season your burrata caprese salad with another light round of sea salt and some cracked black pepper.
7. To finish, drizzle the salad with olive oil and balsamic glaze.
8. Serve and enjoy!
