What is Teriyaki Salmon
Teriyaki salmon is a salmon fillet that is marinated and cooked in teriyaki sauce, causing the sauce to thicken and coat the salmon in a sweet glaze. I prefer to sear my teriyaki salmon on a skillet as it allows you to baste the sauce onto the fish as it’s cooking. I then like to garnish my teriyaki salmon with sesame seeds prior to serving.
How to Make Teriyaki Salmon
As I say in all my teriyaki dishes, the key to great teriyaki is a great teriyaki sauce. I prefer to use my own homemade teriyaki sauce in all my teriyaki dishes. However, if you don’t have time or the ingredients on hand, there are many options available in your grocery store.
Below are step-by-step instructions on how to prepare this flavorful and healthy meal:
1. Marinate both fillets in around a half a cup of teriyaki sauce, making sure the salmon is covered in the sauce. I like to marinate the salmon the night before in the fridge as it gives the salmon a dark color and rich flavor. If you don’t have that much time, marinating for 20 minutes in the fridge will also work.
2. Heat the oil on your skillet on medium heat.
3. Once the skillet is hot, add the salmon fillets to the pan skin side down and cook for 3-4 minutes before flipping. To get a good sear, try not to move the salmon before it’s ready to flip.
4. While the salmon is cooking, lightly season with salt and pepper.
5. After 3-4 minutes, flip salmon and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the salmon is almost fully cooked.
6. After 2-3 minutes, flip the salmon again and cover with 1/4 of a cup of teriyaki sauce. Cook the salmon in the teriyaki sauce until it thickens and coats the salmon (around 1 minute). Use a spoon to continually baste the teriyaki sauce over the salmon while cooking.
7. Garnish with white sesame seeds, serve, and enjoy!
