My version of the dumpling rice bowl is essentially the filling of a gyoza dumpling served on a bed of rice and topped with a couple tablespoons of my sweet and spicy dumpling sauce. This Japanese inspired donburi bowl is packed with a savory umami flavor.

How to Make a Dumpling Rice Bowl

Not only are dumpling rice bowls more filling than traditional dumplings or gyozas, they are also much simpler to make as you eliminate the entire process of wrapping and frying the dumplings.

Below are step-by-step instructions on how to create this simple yet flavorful dish:

1. First, prepare the sweet and spicy dumpling sauce to give the flavors time to meld together prior to serving. To do this, combine all ingredients of the sauce and stir to combine making sure the honey and sriracha sauce are completely dissolved into the sauce.

Pour ingredients for sweet and spicy dumpling sauce into the bowl and mix.

2. Next, prepare the ingredients for the dumpling rice bowl by cooking the rice, shredding the cabbage leaves, dicing the green onions, grating the ginger, and mincing the garlic.

3. In a skillet, add the sesame oil, pork, garlic, ginger, and salt and cook on medium-high heat for around five minutes. Stir with a wooden spoon to break apart the pork and combine the ingredients as they cook.

Heat pork, oil, green onions, ginger, garlic, and sugar in a skillet and cook pork on medium heat to make dumpling mix

4. After the pork has cooked for around five minutes or so, add the soy sauce, shredded carrots, and shredded cabbage to the mixture. Stir to combine and cook for an additional three minutes or so.

Add soy sauce and dumpling veggies ot the skillet.

5. While the mixture is cooking, add a cup and a half of rice to each bowl.

6. After the mixture is done cooking, add 1/4 of the mixture to each rice bowl.

Add filling to the dumpling rice bowl.

7. Drizzle with 1/4 of the sweet and spicy dumpling sauce over the bowl. This will bring the bowl together and pack a flavor punch!

Add sweet and spicy dumpling sauce to the dumpling rice bowl.

8. Serve and enjoy!
